The tortoise has grown and summoned a shy spirit as its helper. Said spirit belongs to none other than Xiao Xingchen and he sees to the tortoise's needs daily, seeing him fed, watered and made comfortable. In return, the eternal creature is healing his wounds and helping him to accept what seems...
Unacceptable. And heart-breaking.
A cry stirs him from his rest one day and he flies to the tortoise's side only to find him...
Upside down? Frowning, he rights the poor creature, laying a gentle hand on the tortoise's brow.
Boredom gnaws at him every day. If he doesn't find something to entertain him, even just a little, then what is the point of any of this?
So he flips that little tortoise over. Every. Single. Day. Knowing it upset both tortoise and the various attendants in charge of this peaceful garden. They never caught him, and even if they did...what would they do?
He'd sensed something new lately though. Something, some spirit perhaps, that has been tending the little creature diligently. So this time he hangs back after flipping the little thing onto it's back. He stays out of sight to watch.
And the man he sees is...not what he'd have expected. It's enough to hold his attention, a flicker of curiosity tilting a corner of his lips up before he vanishes.
The next day, that little tortoise gets flipped right back over onto it's back.
Seeing the little legs waving in distress again for a second time has Xingchen lifting the tortoise and cradling him in his arms.
"Shhh I know that must be frustrating. Who is playing pranks on you, little friend?" he pets the tortoise's head with soft fingers before looking around. Frowning at the magical trace in the air - one linked to a powerful source! - he follows the trail, floating silently.
Until he sees him. It's Xingchen's turn to be curious. The tortoise cries against his shoulder, telling him he found the culprit and he nods.
Gracefully, he confronts the notorious tortoise flipper.
"My lord, forgive me, but are you the one who is causing the eternal tortoise distress daily?"
This one is a spirit, he notes. Certainly. Graceful.
But a human spirit, trapped here perhaps. Connected to the little tortoise.
Yingyuan doesn't quite roll his eyes at the confrontation, casting a glance at the little thing as if in castigation, then flexes some of his power to create a diversion before...simply vanishing. Again.
A slight smirk might be the last thing Xingchen sees this time around.
Jumping slightly at the diversion, Xingchen's frown turns into a scowl. Why would an immortal be so...
Is he rude or mischievous? Biting his lip, he returns the tortoise to his big rock and pool. He even gives him a special treat to eat. That calms the small creature and gives Xingchen time to plan...and think.
Since he is a spirit, he doesn't really need to eat or drink or go anywhere, so he places himself beside the pool.
Only, he makes himself invisible to most eyes, wondering what he will see like this.
The next time he visits, he pauses by the pool. As always. Looks around with a flicker of curiosity - he can feel he's being watched. So he moves on...flicking his fingers to flip the tortoise over when he's further away than before.
Come on, little tortoise, grow stronger and learn to be less helpless!
The baby tortoise cries in frustration and Xingchen is quick to place him back on his feet. Then he follows the deity, his robes fluttering behind him thanks to his speed. He is focused on this task! He must learn more. Who is this deity?
"You should be ashamed of yourself! He is only a little tortoise. He doesn't bother anyone!"
"He is my Master." Xingchen comes to a halt, scowling though he does remember his manners enough to bow, "I am only a stray spirit that was called to Heaven."
By the tortoise he presumes. His image flickers - sometimes he is blindfolded, the bandage bloody - and other times he has his eyes.
Ying Yuan nods at the bow, barely, and ponders that assumption. He's more interested in how the spirit's image flickers.
"Do you remember your life?" Because...simply put...the tortoise is an idle amusement. This fierce spirit could provide much more a break in Heaven's dull plod.
This deity is gorgeous, but Xingchen believes in justice and even now, broken as he is, he tries to adhere to it. The deep gash on his neck is visible too, flickering, as his spirit reveals the damage.
"...yes." he answers hollowly, "I was a Cultivator who allowed himself to be fooled into murdering an entire village."

Such a tiny creature to have such a fierce defender. Is he jealous? No. That can't be it.
